BARD OF PYNN’S BROOK TACKLES “MR. BIG”

MR
BIG

By John Tuach

“Develop
or Perish!” – Smallwood.
A
former ‘Main Man’ steering ship?
The
files will have a familiar flip:
Churchill
River hydro mill –
Cash
for Provincial coffers fill!
Offshore
oil, mines, forestry,
Energy,
and fish – all travesty!
Industrial
avarice in major plays,
Who
abets the give-aways?
Power
to run the metal mines,
Windmill
spins atop the Barrens,
Making
pellets – a money burn,
Old
projects, each in turn.
An
alternate agenda is a toot:
Prolong
the Muskrat money loot
To
obfuscate some other theft –
And
perished public more bereft.
And
some suggest conspiracy:
Plunder
planned (a resource spree?)
A
Nalcor asset fire-sale feast
When
entrails stirred of Muskrat beast.
Did
‘Canada’ steer the scam?
To
issue bonds to build the dam,
To
grab a slab of finance loot,
Perchance
a numbers game afoot.
Is
there ‘The Man’ for subterfuges?
(The
latter crowds only stooges).
That
sat around at Federal tables,
Investment
lucre now enables.
Media
manipulator extraordinaire,
To move
and shake the political air.
Knows
the people (to burn) too green –
A
puppet-master behind the scene?

REMEMBERING BILL MARSHALL

Bill left public life shortly after the signing of the Atlantic Accord and became a member of the Court of Appeal until his retirement in 2003. During his time on the court he was involved in a number of successful appeals which overturned wrongful convictions, for which he was recognized by Innocence Canada. Bill had a special place in his heart for the underdog.

Churchill Falls Explainer (Coles Notes version)

If CFLCo is required to maximize its profit, then CFLCo should sell its electricity to the highest bidder(s) on the most advantageous terms available.

END OF THE UPPER CHURCHILL POWER CONTRACT: IMPROVING OUR BARGAINING POWER

This is the most important set of negotiations we have engaged in since the Atlantic Accord and Hibernia. Despite being a small jurisdiction we proved to be smart and nimble enough to negotiate good deals on both. They have stood the test of time and have resulted in billions of dollars in royalties and created an industry which represents over a quarter of our economy. Will we prove to be smart and nimble enough to do the same with the Upper Churchill?

  1. Mr Big, is the name of the RCMP scheme, an unlawful approach to convict a suspect who may be innocent.
The Man, the media manipulator, the former Main Man, a puppet master behind the scenes……….all seems a reference to Daniel.
Daniel appeared this week with his side kick Jerome Kennedy, upset that the city counsel and the court are not jumping to the Main Mans wishes.
Daniel, himself a lawyer, hired another lawyer to represent him, true to avoid the spectacle that one who acts as his own lawyer , is a fool.
Meanwhile his hired gun, Kennedy, now displays a beard, as if the public may already forget that he was Daniel`s justice minister, who helped push the boondoggle to sanction. He stood in the house to quantify the gravy that would flow: Muskrat Power would sell on the Boston market up to 1.00 per kwh he convinced the House and the public.
Current wholesale prices in New England is more like 3 or 4 cents.
Jerome, his appearance changed, like a bandit, hopes the common folk will not recall his performance in the House, and thinks we are all still too green to burn, a term now a century old, coined by another laywer,Morine, a MHA who was on the take from our railroad builder, Mr Reid, if I recall my history correctly.
    Enjoyed the Bard`s composition.

  2. Yup….that's it, some think develop or perish. Too many ups and downs. A people incapable of governing ourselves. Looking for someone else to govern us, like maybe a ditactor. And they do come along every one in a while. Will mention only two Joey and Danny, and the sad thing about it we give them our full support, without questioning the great one, they can do no wrong. Maybe inbred in us due to our history of fishing admirals and merchants.

But I digress, to two stories that are told, that emphasize where there are diticators they are always little men that are willing to do their biding without question. The story is told of Joey and Rossie, not the sharpes knife in his cabinet. Joey sad, rossie, did you fart, and rossie quickly replied, no premier, but if you want me to, I will. History repeats itself. Several years later in the same land, another diticator, said Eddie is there any way we can bring that power to sin John's, and Eddie replied, no premier, but if you give me enough money, I will. And he replied, no problem there, we have oil money coming out of our ears. And muskrat was born, not to be stopped by he'll or high water. The only difference, with Joey and Rossie it was more personal, with Dany and Eddie, it affects us all. But the same mentality, little tin soldiers more than willing to do their emperors bidding, without a moments hesitation….My taught for today. Amen.

  3. During the Quebec FLQ crisis, there was much talk of Joey and his Ministers having beefed up security and personal body guards.
One of Joey`s men, an MHA, Mr Dawe, from Bay Roberts, who spoke with a heavy accent. He was on VOCM, and the question was put to him: `Do you have a body guard, Mr Dawe`
`Dere ain`t no Godd on I` replied the Minister.
A resident form Upper Island Cove, who knew Dawe, would tell me this now and again, with a chuckle, before he passed on a year ago, saying hardly anyone could understand what Dawe ever said, but it never mattered.
And I wonder, the Rossie fart joke, Did Ray Guy invent that one,or was the word fart was not then permitted by the Telegram censors……..
Often, ridicule of politicians is the only consolation to the public.
Politicians in Nfld have an entertainment value to the masses who have remained incapable of attracting or electing competent people to run our government affairs. We have more than our share of world class jaskasses in government and govn agencies.
Look at the competence and qualification of the Boards …..political patronage appointments with little or no qualifications for the jobs.

  4. And he's bloody-well right, he's nailed it.

Get out while the gettin's good Jim… partisan politics and its blighted entourage of inept dimwits and dodgy culprits has turned this wretched province into an economic wasteland, devoid of a future or any semblance of opportunity for its rapidly diminishing pool of young people.

  5. This is so sad. I have read James McLeod`s writing and admired his insights and reports. That the good leave, because they see no alternative is understandable but not a solution to our problems. And we will see less coverage in the main media of issues that are so urgent.
Perhaps there is value in his leaving……..that such out migration may be seen as the tip of the iceberg of what may happen if many others follow his example, if this might awaken politicians as to what lies ahead and address the realities of our circumstances.
But James`s statement says he acts form self interest. While understandable, I think that self interest by politicians is what has landed us in this spot. We need politicians with more public interest and less self interest. Can we name one MHA of this class, with true concern for the public good…….
If not, then as James says , there appears no solution, as we head into the black hole of massive debt.

Who in NL, ( Local politician), is writing the message on Muskrat? Would anyone dare to run on such a radical idea in the next year or so? Are locals not concerned that Muskrat seems to have not taught any lessons, and that the upcoming "Carbon Tax" policy may not make a difference in how non-renewable energy is used, supplied, and managed for your grandchildren.
